Saint Petersburg Museums, Palaces and Historic Collections is a portable hardback guide featuring 40 of the city’s lesser known or visited treasures. Each visitor site has at least a double page of introductory information complete with an illustrative colour photograph or two.

The guide expressly does not include The Hermitage, Yusupov’s Palace, or The Russian Museum which are so widely covered in other guides and easily located, but it does feature the Peter and Paul Fortress, Peter the Great’s Log Cabin and the Aurora battleship museum.

Some of the lesser known gems to be recommended are the Museum of Russian Vodka, the Museum of the Defence and Blockade of Leningrad, Dostoevskii Literary Memorial Museum and the Bread Museum.

The inside covers of the book show a basic museum and palace locator plan and a simple topological metro map but neither should be relied upon for orientation.
