Highly recommended - this map is simply streets ahead of all its competitors, as anyone who has explored central London on foot will testify: great overall clarity of presentation, excellent placing of names, exceptional presentation of small passages and shortcuts between buildings, etc. In short, as near as one can ever come to a map user's dream come true!
Using tube stations as markers to indicate the coverage, on one side is a street plan at approx. 1:9,700 extending from Kilburn Park/Notting Hill Gate/Earl’s Court to Shoredich/ Aldgate East (i.e. just beyond the Tower Bridge), and from St. John’s Wood/Mornington Crescent/Angel to the Oval/Kennington/Borough, with the bottom right hand corner taken up by an inset showing bus routes within the same area.
Excellent use of colours and symbols enables the publishers to indicate parks and green spaces; markets, prime shopping areas, and selected shops; pedestrian zones, elevated walkways, and access to streets and passages by steps; places of interest including tourist information centres, theatres, cinemas, and selected well known pubs: transport network including streets with bus routes, Underground stations, overground railway lines with local and main line stations, and coach stations; for drivers, car parks and streets with restricted access or no entry, although one way streets are not marked; selected hotels, places of worship, post offices, police stations, viewpoints, etc., and last but certainly not least, public toilets! A map of the London Underground network is shown on the back cover. The same map is also available from its publishers as a handy A5-size pocket atlas.
On the reverse the two most visited parts of central London, the West End and the City, are shown enlarged to reveal still more detail, with first class presentation of small public passages through or between buildings, which make exploring areas such as the City or Covent Garden such fun! Extensive street index is accompanied by lists of hotels, places of entertainment, tube and rail stations, a shopping guide, and general tourist information.
Stanfords store is marked at the top of square X3 on the West End enlargement, with the beginning of our name just visible on the map’s cover!
Since the tone of this description is markedly different from what we generally write on our website, it is perhaps appropriate for the writer to identify herself: I’m Margaret (Malgorzata) Ross, Stanfords' Import Map Buyer. I’m a keen explorer of London’s nooks and crannies, and I have used the Bensons plan ever since I discovered it years ago, so the above description is written with full personal knowledge of its very exceptional qualities.
