Rachel Zadok’s first novel Gem Squash Tokoloshe takes its title from a chant mumbled by Faith, a young white girl living in mid-eighties South Africa at the height of apartheid on a drought-stricken farm. At the age of seven her father leaves and her mother breaks down having become more and more preoccupied with the black African world of spirits - tales that terrify Faith.

Struggling to make sense of this world she depends on her vivid imagination to survive the discord between her parents and her mother’s increasing insanity, against the backdrop of a chaotically divided but deeply beautiful country.

In the second half, following her mother’s death, Faith returns to the farm she left as a child to confront past mysteries and the beliefs her society and upbringing instilled in her.
