Petals of Blood is a novel based firmly in the reality of its times, portraying a post independence Kenya ruled by greed, corruption and brutality. Paradoxically, the blistering criticism of the legacy of colonialism burns with the most fervid hope for the future of the country.

Petals of Blood caused huge controversy in Kenya when it was first published in 1977 and led to the imprisonment of its author Ngugi wa Thiong’o. The novel deals with a fictional murder in the Kenyan town of Ilmorog. Four suspects are placed in detention, but in a place already filled with fear and intimidation there can no easy solutions to the crime. The more the murder is investigated, the more it becomes apparent that the lives of suspects and victims are inextricably linked to the fortunes of their own place of habitation, and to the crisis of modern Kenya as a whole.
