France: Forts, Citadels and Military Museums Map from the IGN presents locations of military museums, plus various fortifications from pre-Vauban to the Maginot line and the Atlantic wall, indicating those open to the general public.

The forts and other installations are divided into periods according to when they were built and include fortifications associated with the great names of France’s military architecture: Vauban, Haxo, Séré de Rivières and Maginot. Enlargements present several areas in greater detail: the coast around Toulon, Briançon, Modane, Verdun, Oléron, Belle-Ile and the environs of Paris. Also included is an inset showing French and Prussian fortifications in Alsace-Lorraine from 1874 to 1940.

The map has as its base IGN’s general road map of France highlighting the country’s motorway network and connecting routes, but also showing many of the local D-roads, all with their numbers. Current edition of this map was prepared in 1995, so not all road information is up to date.

On the reverse is extensive text, including biographies of Vauban, Séré de Rivières and André Maginot and a glossary of terms associated with military architecture. The map is illustrated with numerous colour photos.

Map legend and all the text include English.

This title is one of several thematic tourist maps published by the IGN with their general road map of France as a base and aiming to present the country’s cultural and historical heritage, opportunities for outdoor pursuits, etc.
