A large world map (111x149cm) showing the plate tectonics, volcanoes, earthquakes and impact craters. Colourful bathymetric and elevation tinting, combined with delicate shading shows the planet’s relief while additional graphics and symbols indicate locations of major geological processes which have shaped - and continue to alter - the planet. These include volcanoes (classified according to era of eruption), earthquakes and impact craters (classified by magnitude) and plate tectonic movements, convergence and divergence. Numbers next to some symbols denote especially notable events which are referred to in the tables on the reverse of the map, which explain their particular significance. Latitude and longitude lines are at 10° spacings, with intermediate margin ticks. Mercator projection, with additional polar projections.

Also on the reverse are several information panels, complemented by diagrams, photographs and more detailed maps, highlight examples of fundamental processes in more detail eg. transform faults, the formation of ocean trenches, mountain range formation and volcanic hotspots. A timeline with diagrams demonstrates the continental shifts which have occurred over the vast expanses of geological time.

Prepared in cooperation with the Smithsonian Institution and the US Naval Research Laboratory.
