ABOUT IGN’s TOP 25 / SÉRIE BLEUE TOPOGRAPHIC SURVEY MAPS

IGN's topographic survey of France at 1:25,000 is published in two versions:

TOP25 MAPS (map numbers ending in T or TR) cover areas of particular tourist interest: the Alps, Pyrenees, Cevennes, Vosges, Provence, Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts, etc. An overprint highlights local footpaths, long-distance GR routes and, where appropriate, ski routes. Other tourist information indicated by symbols includes campsites, huts, mountain refuges, equestrian or canoeing centres, notable sites, etc. Map legend is in French and English. Each TOP25 map covers an area of approximately 28 x 21 km / 17 x 13 miles. Selected TOP25 titles are available in two or three formats - in addition to the standard paper version there are also:

- Waterproof and tear-resistant editions (map numbers ending in TR), published by IGN in a new format since April 2013. Each TR version shows the same area and information as its paper equivalent, but is double-sided to reduce the sheet size and printed with a good overlap between the sides. Please note: for popular areas not yet covered by the IGN’s TR editions, Stanfords provides waterproof versions of the single-sided paper maps, as indicated in the individual descriptions of such titles.

- Mini TOP25 maps are available for the most visited parts of the Alps and the Pyrenees. Each map is double-sided to reduce the size of the sheet and covers a slightly smaller area than the corresponding TOP25 number. For exact coverage please see individual descriptions.

SÉRIE BLEUE MAPS (map numbers ending with E or O) covering the rest of France have no special overprint to show waymarked hiking routes or other tourist information. The legend is in French only. Each Série Bleue map covers an area of approximately 20 x 14 km / 12 x 9 miles, with some maps slightly larger.

Both series have similar cartography, with a contour interval of 5m, except for mountainous areas, where the maps have hill shading and contours at 10m intervals. Since March 1999 all new editions have a 1-km UTM grid.
