The A to Z Guide to Afghanistan Assistance from the Kabul-based Afghanistan Research and Evaluation Unit is a comprehensive directory of the country’s administrative system, with maps and street plans of main cities and contact details for various bodies listed in it.

Compiled from information provided as voluntary contributions from ministries and governmental organizations, embassies, foreign and national NGOs and other institutions, the guide is divided into six sections:

A to Z: listing various organizations operating within the country or connected with it, all with descriptions of their activities and, where possible, website addresses. Also included in this section are notes on international conferences or agreements relating to the current situation in Afghanistan.

Government: with notes on the country’s governmental structure and its public sector, including the functioning of the executive, the legislature and the judiciary, the electoral system, local government arrangements, etc.

Documents: a 46-page chapter with the country’s constitution, the Afghanistan Compact agreement and a Code of Conduct for the NGOs.

Maps: five double-sided, high quality maps, opening out to 40 x 29cm and showing an administrative, a physical map and a population density map of the country, plus street plans of Kabul (general and the city centre), Hirat, Jalalabad, Kandahar, Kunduz and Mazari Sharif. The city maps are annotated with icons highlighting locations of various public buildings and amenities, including hotels, banks, police, medical facilities, etc.

Contacts: with province by province by province listing of various governmental or community organizations and foreign embassies, all with full contact details

Reference Index: including lists of acronyms and notes on the three calendar system used in the country.
