Fraser Island Atlas and Guide: a spiral-bound book from Hema combining a guide to the island and its attractions, illustrated with numerous colour photos, with a road atlas and special maps overprinted with recommended routes, etc.

The guide section starts with introductory information on the island’s history, geography, fauna and flora. In “Planning the Trip” the publishers give advice on when to go, vehicle and camping permits, special precautions, etc. Where to Stay chapter offer information on various types of accommodation including contact details. Getting Around has advice on the best types of vehicles suitable for the island’s terrain, driving in the sand, connections with the mainland, etc.

The main What to See and What to Do sections provide descriptions of main places of interest, with recommendations for trips accompanied by map extracts overprinted with the routes. Extensive lists of contact addresses are provided for bird watching tours, boat rentals, etc.

The final section provides mapping of the whole island at 1:130,000 with contours at 40m intervals, colouring for beaches, sand dunes, mangroves, protected areas including marine parks, etc. Restricted entry zone for vehicles are clrealy marked. A very extensive range of symbols highlight various facilities, including accommodation and food or fuel supplies, recreational opportunities, etc. The maps have a UTM grid for GPS users.
