Australia Souvenir Map from Hema, combining an indexed road map highlighting protected areas and Aboriginal lands with an administrative map annotated with panels of “Fun Facts”, plus photos of the country’s famous landmarks, fauna and flora, etc.
On one side is map of Australia at 1:8,000,000 presenting its network of main roads and railways. Major highways are shown with their names; many connecting roads are also annotated with driving distances; across the Outback 4WD tracks are also marked. Colouring indicates national parks or other protected areas and Aboriginal lands. The map has latitude and longitude lines at intervals of 2° and is accompanied by a distance table. Surrounding the map are colour photos of Australia’s famous landmarks, fauna and flora, etc.
On the reverse is an index for the main map, plus a map of Australia with states in different colours on a base showing the country’s main geographical features: mountain, deserts, etc. The map is annotated with various “Fun Facts” (best to avoid Cloncurry in Queensland which has the highest recorded temperature of 53°C), with eight separate panels giving various facts and figures for each state plus the ACT. A series of small maps demonstrates the size of the country, indicating how easily the British Isles would fit into New South Wales alone.
