Tasmania Atlas and Guide: an A4, spiral-bound atlas and guide from Hema combining road maps with informative text on the island’s attractions, famous destinations and places to stay. The book has been designed for self-drive visitors, with an emphasis on nature-based activities and attractions, and is illustrated throughout with colour photographs.

The text provides a historical overview with an introduction to geology, fauna and flora. Trip planning advice is covered along with general guidance on special precautions, responsible camping, communications and safe driving. There are plenty of suggestions for recreational activities: cycling, bush walking, fishing or bird watching, with details for sources of more information. Recommendations for wine-testing are accompanied by a detailed table listing local wineries with opening times and types of wine available there.

Individual chapters divide the island into nine sections, within which specific locations and attractions are described, accompanied by detailed map extracts or street plans and illustrated with numerous colour photos. .

The final atlas section is at 1:1,000,000 and presents Hema’s typically clear cartography. Relief shading and colouring for national parks and other protected areas presents the topography. Road detail includes minor roads and 4WD tracks, and indicating driving distances on main roads and locations of fuel supplies. A range of symbols highlight campsites and caravan parks, visitors’ information centres, and various points of interest. The maps have latitude and longitude margin ticks at intervals of 30’.

Also provided are street plans of central Hobart, Burnie, Devonport, and Launceston. The index gives references both for the atlas and the main guide sections. Map legend is conveniently placed in a flap of the back cover.
