The Outback Way Atlas and Guide: an A4, spiral-bound guide and atlas from Hema of the Outback Way, Australia’s “longest shortcut” - a 2750km route from Perth in Western Australia, across Alice Springs in the Red Centre, to Cairns in Queensland, with stage by stage detailed maps, descriptions of places, accommodations, etc.

The opening 46 pages provide a general introduction and advice for planning a trip across such a varied and demanding terrain. Information includes vehicle preparation, bush survival, aboriginal culture, climate, biodiversity and landscape, accommodation with full contact details, itineraries and 4WD tracks linking into the Outback Way, etc., plus a section geocaching along the route.

The route itself, divided into seven stages, is presented on detailed maps (scales vary) with GPS waypoints and a wide range of symbols indicating various facilities, including emergency services, fuel and garages, stores, accommodation, campsites, drinking water, information centres, airstrips, etc. Descriptions of places of interest have star rating. Around Alice Springs and Uluru (Ayers Rock) mapping is extended beyond the areas adjoining the route to provide a wider coverage for exploring this fascination region.

Also included is a chapter with illustrations of over 100 specimens of local flora and fauna, suggestions for travel games and activities for all ages, plus an indexed atlas section providing an overview of the whole routes and street plans Laverton, Alice Springs (with enlargements for Yulara, Uluru and Kata Tjuta areas) Boulia and Winton.
