Canada Back Road Atlas from MapArt offers the most comprehensive coverage of the country’s road network, combining the publisher’s extensive range of detailed road maps into one impressive, A4 paperback volume of 702 pages.

Very detailed presentation of the road network distinguishes 10 different types of roads. Road numbering is clearly shown and, where appropriate, road names are given, with a separate road index also provided. Railway lines are shown with stations and ferry connections are marked. Time zone and local administrative boundaries are shown with names of the administrative units.

National and provincial parks and other protected areas are prominently marked and numerous places of interest and facilities are highlighted, including different types of campsites. The maps also show selected hiking and cycling trails. The base map shows the network of rivers and lakes and has relief shading with names of mountain ranges and peak heights to indicate the topography.

Coverage, at scales varying accordingly to the density of population, is arranged by province, with all sections colour-coded for easy reference (see below for scales). Each province has a separate distance table. In the Atlantic Provinces and British Columbia additional information on ferry connections is provided. Some provinces also have additional tourist information, e.g. a list of wineries in British Columbia.

The maps have no geographical coordinates but within Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and parts of British Columbia the grid for the Townships and Ranges survey system is shown in the margins. The 124 page index section has two separate lists: an index of localities for the whole country, plus an index of road names arranged by province.

The provinces are covered at the following scales:

Southern Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut at 1:5,000,000. The northern parts of these provinces are not included.

British Columbia and Alberta at 1:2,000,000, plus southern BC and the whole of Alberta at 1:500,000. Enlargements at 1:250,000 or 1:200,000 cover the environs of Vancouver, Lower Fraser Valley, Nanaimo, Victoria, Qualicum Beach, Okanagan Valley, Calgary and Edmonton.

Saskatchewan and Manitoba at 1:2,000,000, plus the southern part of each province at 1:540,000, with environs of Saskatoon, Regina and Winnipeg at 1:250,000.

Southern Ontario at 1:2,000,000, with enlargements at 1:250,000 for Thunder Bay and Sault Ste. Marie. The south-eastern part of the province is shown at 1:250,000.

Quebec at 1:6,500,000, with southern Quebec at 1:1,250,000 plus St. Lawrence River corridor and other more densely populated parts of the province at 1:250,000.

Atlantic Provinces: New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island at 1:250,000. Southern Labrador and Newfoundland are shown at 1:500,000, with selected areas at 1:250,000.
