USA in an excellent road atlas from Hema providing continuous coast-to-coast coverage of the whole country at 1:1,000,000 rather than mapping at scales adjusted to the size of each state. Enlargements for the Northeast Corridor and main urban conurbations, extensive introductory section, GPS coordinates on all the maps and very clear cartography make this atlas an exceptionally well designed publication.

The whole country is covered by continuous mapping at 1:1,000,000, using clear cartography with fine relief shading and plenty of topographic information provided by names of mountain ranges, peaks and passes. Colouring highlights national and state parks or forests, Indian reservations and restricted entry military areas.

Different types of roads are well differentiated and numbered, with main highways clearly annotated with service and rest areas. The maps also show railway lines and local airports. State and county boundaries are marked, as well as time zones. Numerous places of interest are prominently highlighted and/or indicated by an extensive range of symbols. GPS coordinates are provided by latitude and longitude lines at intervals of 30’. Each set of adjoining pages clearly shows which part of USA is covered on them. Map legend is conveniently placed on a flap in the back cover.

The Northeastern Corridor from north of Boston to Washington DC and over 60 main urban conurbations are shown enlarged to 1:250,00 for greater clarity, with, where appropriate, names of local roads. Also included are street plans of central New York City, Boston, Chicago Las Vegas and San Francisco. The main section at 1:1,000,000 also covers the southern parts of Ontario and Quebec, including Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal.

A 24-page introductory chapter includes special maps and descriptions of several national parks, as well as sections on outdoor adventures, natural wonders, family fun, entertainment, culture and discovery, American history and the “Americana”.

Also provided are lists of useful addresses, a metric conversion chart, plus a comprehensive distance table and a distances-cum-travel-time map.
