The main plan covers the built-up areas within the city’s administrative borders, with each district in a different colour. Streets are shown with selected house numbers for easier identification of addresses. Tram routes are marked and railway lines are shown with names of stations.

Symbols highlight various places of interest and facilities, many cross-referenced to extensive lists on the reverse of the map with addresses and phone numbers of over 40 hotels, 29 travel agencies, 33 embassies or consulates, numerous cultural institutions, etc.

The plan is indexed and also includes a reproduction of a city map from 1879, a map and graphs showing the expansion of Almaty between 1918 and 2003, notes on the city’s history, plus a map of the environs at 1:138,000.
