5Central Ghent street plan from De Rouck Geocart, printed on light, waterproof and tear-resistant plastic paper, with shops, restaurants, cafes and bars, plus places of interest highlighted on three enlargements of the city’s most popular areas.

The main plan covers the city’s historic heart with parts of the adjoining districts extending roughly from the main railway station to the Maudepoort, and east to the Groot Begijnhof and Santo Campo cemetery, two of the 28 places of interest specially highlighted an the plan and described briefly on the reverse side.

The plan is indexed and shows one way streets and main traffic arteries. Places of interest such as museum and churches are clearly marked. In addition to the 28 main sights the map highlights 10 museums, each also provided with a brief description.

On the reverse three most popular areas are shown enlarged and annotated with a selection of several interesting restaurants and shops. Also provided is a small road map of the city’s environs showing road access to the centre.

Map legend and all the descriptions or other notes are in French and Dutch only.

Some may find it interesting to ponder why in the brief history of city the French version calls it “le Manchester du continent”, whilst the Dutch text refers only to “Engelse weeftechnologie”.
