Historical Mapping

This new service replaces the previous one from Ordnance Survey direct and offers the following improvements:

• Some products can now be site-centred.
• Maps are supplied to Stanfords electronically and so can be printed onsite.
• This means that the enquiry, order and delivery times are much faster than before.

• Standard sheets are only available for County Series pre 1958.
• Maps were produced by epoch not by year so there are gaps in the years covered.
• There was only one edition of each map area completed in each epoch.
• Different areas were completed in different years during an epoch.
• The site-centred maps may cover a range of standard sheets over a period of years to make the final composite map (see some of the samples below).

As a rough guide the epochs are as follows:

Epoch 1: 1843 to 1893 (although in practice most occur in the 1880s).
Epoch 2: 1890 to 1912 (although in practice most occur either side of the turn of the century).
Epoch 3: 1904 to 1919 (although in practice most occur between 1918 and 1922).
Epoch 4: 1919 to 1943 (although in practice most occur between 1932 and 1938).
Epoch 5: 1955 to 1965 (evenly spaced).
Epoch 6: 1970 to 1990 (evenly spaced).

We will obviously identify the map closest to your preferred year and we won't process any orders prior to confirming with customers that this closest year is suitable.
