Central Netherlands - the area known locally as the Randstad and the Green Heart, including many of the country’s most visited locations: Amsterdam, Haarlem, Leiden, The Hague, Delft, Rotterdam, Dordrecht, Gouda and Utrecht – on a special cycling map designed to present the region’s varied heritage of old farmsteads, canal lanes, historic towns and villages, etc.
The main map at 1:200,000 covers an area bordered north of Amsterdam by the North Sea Canal and Zandaam, Amersfoort in the east, and the Rhine (called here by the Dutch the Waal) in the south. Road network highlights 12 recommended cycling routes, indicating the numbers of the cycling junctions through which they pass. The map shows scenic paths, canals with towpaths, old 14th century farm lanes, 17th century towns centres and villages, and highlights various attractions from the famous Keukenhof flower fields to Heineken’s main brewery. 12 panels provide enlargements for navigating the recommended routes across Amsterdam, Haarlem, Leiden, The Hague, Delft, Rotterdam, Dordrecht, Gouda, Utrecht, Zaandam Gorinchem and Alphen aan den Rijn.
On the reverse a panel provides an overview of the whole region with the recommended routes. Two historical maps show the region’s development and land reclamation from the 13th to the present day. A further set of maps provides an interesting comparison between the Randstad area, one of Europe’s most densely populated regions, and London, Paris and Berlin.
The map provides a useful tool for planning an interesting cycling visit to the Netherlands, whether as an extension of a city break in Amsterdam or as a longer trip.
