Authentic Rome is the Touring Club Italiano, Italy’s leading travel publisher, guide to exploring the history, culture, food and wine, local markets and festivals of the city and surrounds. The guide has been designed for independent travellers with in-depth information and advice about how to make the most of a visit. Colour-coded sections also allow easy access to specific information on the city and there is also a section dedicated to suggested itineraries. Colour photographs are included throughout the guide, illustrating some of Rome’s most picturesque sites, shopping opportunities and local cuisine.
The guide is structured in seven main sections - Heritage, Itineraries, Food, Shopping, Events and Practical Information - providing a comprehensive exploration of the city. The Heritage section is divided into eight recommended routes, including the Holy City, Via del Corso, the Lateran Palace area and a route from Torre delle Milizie to the Trevi fountain. Each route has colour maps showing notable local sites, detailed descriptions of the history and heritage of the area, suggested day-trips and also references to page numbers to other relevant sections in the guide.
The Itineraries section suggests themed outings that are grouped under children, industry museums, fountains, wellness, cinema, walks, gastronomy routes, a boat trip on the Tiber, Underground Rome and ‘talking statues’. A detailed Food section explores the local cuisine with sections dedicated to traditional dishes, pasta, hams and salami, cheese, oil, wine, liqueurs, cakes and food and wine festivals in addition to recommended restaurants in each region of the city where you can sample the local food.
The shopping chapter is organised under three main headings - Arts and Crafts, Markets and Fashion - and recommended emporiums are listed alphabetically across the region with individual contact details also included. Information on annual and seasonal music and folklore events provides useful ideas for making the most of your trip. A reference section at the back of the book provides an A-Z of practical information including contact details for hotels and restaurants, opening times, museums and monuments and night-life, in addition to advice on getting to Rome and getting around.
