Tokyo Stories is an anthology of translated short stories by Japanese writers which depict the city of Tokyo over the course of the twentieth century – a period of continual and deep change, as well as a time during which the city has experienced extreme examples of urbanization and modernisation that have altered and reshaped the geography and people of the city.
Eighteen stories, that illuminate different parts of Tokyo, are included in this collection. In literary sketches and popular fiction, Tokyo Stories portrays the nightspots, homes, department stores and working class neighbourhoods of Japan’s capital, in the evocative and often ironic tone of its national writers.
An introduction by translator and editor Lawrence Rodgers preludes the anthology, which includes pieces by better known writers such as Akutagawa Ryunosuke, Kawabata Yasunari, Hayashi Fumiko and Natsume Soseki, as well as including work by Ikeda Michiko and Inaba Mayumi whose writings have been translated into English for the first time. Each story is prefaced with a brief introduction that places the piece and its author in context.
