J.G. Link’s Venice for Pleasure has become a minor classic, remaining in print for over forty years and now in its eighth edition. To celebrate its 40th anniversary Pallas Athene has made it available in this limited edition hardback format. The guide is unique in that it is intended for those who come to visit the city for enjoyment, rather than those who feel a pressing urge to visit Venice and move quickly onto the next destination. Its simple objective, in the authors own words, is to guide readers to places they might otherwise miss and, having reached them, to tell visitors what they might whish to know and then leave them, preferably at a café, to admire, to enjoy, and perhaps be disappointed.
Structured as a series of descriptive walks that can be completed in a day, Links invites the reader to follow him as he explores the myriad passageways of this fascinating city. Only occasionally does the guide venture inside a building, and as such it is ideally aimed at those wanting to explore the city on foot. The visitor is encouraged to spend longer on the more curious and unusual sites of the city as well as those that are better known. Beautiful illustrations throughout the guide provide perspectives on Venice over the past 500 years, documenting just how much of it still remains today. Maps, old and new, are provided for each walk and appendices give valuable information about the public boat services, food and drink and books about the city. Sections on Venice for children’s pleasure and the delights of Brenta are now included in this edition. A wonderful gift for anyone who adores what is surely one of the world’s most beautiful cities.
