East Africa in the Watching Wildlife series from Lonely Planet; providing a comprehensive guide to observing wildlife in their natural habitats in some of the world’s most diverse areas. The guides cover a wide range of wildlife and include useful practical guidance on discovering what’s there and how to find it, background information on the animals and advice on planning, techniques and equipment. Designed to be practical, the guides allow reader to identify animals they want to see or which places they want to visit, allowing flexibility in planning any trip.
Widely recognised for their reliability, Watching Wildlife Lonely Planet guides all have the same layout, covering the local nature, wildlife-watching, habitats, specific destinations and a wildlife gallery. Each guide has an introductory chapter on the natural history of the destination, including information on the local environment, wildlife, the impact of humans and conservation in the region. The Wildlife-watching chapter gives extensive tips and hints on the art of watching wildlife, with details of when to go, how to look, equipment and clothing, getting around and identifying animals.
An extensive Destinations chapter sets out the best places to watch wildlife in the region, including overview maps to show each area, the sort of wildlife to expect and a ‘Wildlife Highlights’ box identifying the main things to look out for. The Wildlife Gallery chapter features various pictures of the wildlife of the region as well as advice on how to recognise each one, their habitats, general behaviour, breeding and feeding patterns. ‘Hotspots’ for particular animals are also reference at the bottom of each page. Mammals, birds and other forms of wildlife are all grouped separately. A Wildlife Checklist is also included, allowing visitors to keep track of the wildlife they have seen.
