Ngorongoro Conservation Area in an excellent series of detailed maps from Harms Verlag, a German publisher specializing in coverage of the country. All titles are contoured, indicate various types of terrain and/or vegetation, and carry plenty of tourist information.
The maps provide a good supplement for their very attractive map of the whole of Tanzania.
In this title: a contoured map of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, plus an enlargement for the Ngorongoro Crater itself. On the main map coverage includes much of Lake Manyara, northern Lake Enyasi and part of the adjacent Serengeti Plain in the north-west. Topography is very attractively presented by contour lines at 100m intervals, spot heights, and subtle relief shading, and the map indicates various types of terrain and vegetation: lava, sand or mud, soda flats, swamps, forest, bush, etc. The map shows local roads and unpaved seasonal tracks, entry gates, rangers’ posts and information points, hotels and lodges, petrol stations, sites of interest, hospitals, campsites and hostels, view points, etc. Boundaries of the park and conservation/game control areas are clearly marked. The map has a UTM grid, with latitude and longitude margin ticks at 5' intervals.
On the reverse side a more detailed map at 1:60,000 (with 50m contours) shows the Ngorongoro Crater, indicating campsite, lodges, observation points, etc. There are also extensive notes in English, French and German describing the area and regulations for visitors. Map legend also includes Kiswahili.
