Germany’s Romantic Road, or the Romantische Strasse, is Gordon McLachlan’s Cicerone walking guide to exploring one of Germany’s oldest and most popular of touring routes. Starting at the charming Alpine town of Fussen, the Romantic Road travels to the famous royal castles of Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein, through the pre-Alpine landscape if the Pfaffenwinkel with its ornate pilgrimage churches, to Landsberg am Lech. From there it goes down the Lech valley to the great Renaissance city of Augsberg. It continues to Donauworth on the Danube, along the Wornitz valley to castle crowned Harburg, then through the moon-like Ries crater to the walled medieval town of Nordlingen. Two more walled towns, Dinkelsbuhl and Rothenburg are also highlights. From the latter, it proceeds along the gentle Tauber valley via the former princely capital of Weikersheim and the plush spa of Bad Mergentheim. The Romantic Road terminates in Wurzburg, a city equally renowned for culture and gastronomy.

The guide is organized in 25 sections detailing each stage of the route. There is a detailed introduction providing information on how best to plan your trip and also practical considerations for the route ahead. 3 Appendices at the back of the guide offer further information on useful words and phrases, opening times and accommodation information. Detailed route descriptions are accompanied by a line drawing mapping the route as well as colour photographs illustrating some of the highlights of the route.
