Italy in the Cycling series from Lonely Planet; exploring the cycling opportunities in a range of international destinations, providing itineraries and suggestions for short and more extended tours. Frank and informal in style, the guides have detailed route descriptions exploring a range of cycling routes across the country and also include mountain-bike routes where relevant. Written and researched by a team of experts, each book is independent in its recommendations and suggestions, often offering individual takes on each ride.
Widely recognised for their reliability, each Lonely Planet Cycling guide has the same layout, with dedicated sections for each region of the country, details of cycle routes on and off the beaten track and nearby towns and facilities to each ride. A summary ‘Table of Rides’ is provided at the start of each guide, giving an overview of each route by region and including information on duration, distance, difficulty and a short summary of the main characteristics of the route. Further introductory chapters give advice on planning your trip and the local environment.
Introductory information on when to cycle, what to bring, maps, information sources and getting to and from the ride are provided at the start of each route. Detailed route descriptions are accompanied by overview maps showing the route, elevation graphs illustrating gradients and climbs during the ride. There is also a brief summary of any mountain-bike tracks in the region. A ‘Towns and Facilities’ section at the end of each regional chapter gives practical guidance on places to stay, where to eat and drink and supplies and equipment.
An extensive chapter dedicated to ‘Your Bicycle’ provides useful advice on choosing and setting up a bike, maintenance, fixing punctures, chains, riding positions, comfort considerations, fixing a flat and loading your bicycle. Health and Safety is also considered, with practical information on pre-trip preparation, staying healthy, avoiding cycling ailments, safety on the bike and relevant emergency procedures that need to be considered.
