James Roberts’ Cicerone guide to the Mountains of Romania is an extensive survey of one of Europe’s finest walking destinations. Long isolated, Romania’s Carpathian mountains are ideal walking country for varying standards of walker, with well-way-marked paths and a good network of mountain huts. Romania also has a remarkable wealth of wildlife, the region being one of the last strongholds of wolf and bear. As well as guiding the reader through remoter areas, the guide also covers popular region such Poiana Brasov.

The guide is organized in thirteen chapters, with each section detailing a different Romanian mountain range from the Retezat to the Eastern Carpathians. An opening chapter offers advice on planning you trip and general tips for walking in the mountains. Detailed route descriptions are accompanied by colour maps which clearly highlight the walk and also give an indication of gradients which may affect the difficulty of a particular walk. Colour photographs also give an indication of some of the distinctive landscape of the Romanian mountains.
