South Africa at 1:1,400,000 on an indexed road map with topographic and tourist information, published by Rough Guides with cartography from the highly acclaimed World Mapping Project by the German publishers Reise Know-How. The map is double-sided to provide the best balance between a good scale and a convenient size sheet.

The map divides South Africa west/east with a good overlap between the sides. Light altitude colouring with contours, peak heights, names of mountain ranges and graphics for salt flats presents the country’s topography. Road network shows unsurfaced roads and tracks and gives driving distances on main routes. Railway lines are included and local airports are marked. The map also shows internal administrative divisions with names of the provinces.

National parks, game reserves and other protected areas are highlighted and a range of symbols mark various places of interest including UNESCO World Heritage sites, caves and hot springs, beaches and diving sites, etc. Features specially recommended by Rough Guides are also indicated. Latitude and longitude lines are drawn at intervals of 1°. The map has an extensive index of localities.

”World Mapping Project” is an extensive series of maps at varying scales, aiming to provide coverage of countries and regions worldwide using clear, well presented cartography with both topographic and tourist information. Some maps in this series have been published in Britain by Rough Guides with the same cartography. The remaining titles are listed on our website in their original Reise Know-How editions.

Sample of cartography:

Some elements of the cartography e.g. minor roads and contours are printed relatively faintly compared with other information such as major roads. Although clearly legible on the map, the lower contrast of these details has made them less obvious on the reproduction of the cartography presented here.
