United States Road Atlas 2012 edition from Rand McNally in an A3 paperback format, with over 380 additional detailed city and national parks maps, plus Rand McNally’s ‘Best of the Road’ recommended trips section.

States are presented in alphabetical order and at a scale varying according to their size. Each state map is accompanied by insets showing city maps and, where appropriate, enlargements of national parks. Most states are presented on one or two pages; larger ones such as California or Texas cover more pages and are accompanied by more maps of urban conurbations.

Road detail includes toll roads, secondary roads, selected unpaved roads, scenic routes, intermediate driving distances on main roads, rest and service areas on interstate highways; airports, ferry routes, and railway lines are also included. Points of interest such as national parks, forests and recreation areas are clearly marked. Spot heights are used to denote topography. National, county, state, and time zone boundaries are indicated; latitude and longitude margin ticks are on most maps at 1° or 30’ intervals.

The accompanying city maps show main traffic arteries and highlight principal places of interest. The national parks enlargements provide more topographic information through relief shading and indicate main traffic routes and sights or facilities. The place name index is organized state-by-state and includes names of counties.

The US section is followed by Canadian territory on 11 pages, and a one-page general map of Mexico and Puerto Rico.



The ‘Best of the Road’ section includes five driving trips mapped out by Rand McNally editors (Warm, Wild Alaska; Following the Old Man River; Around Lake Erie; Earth Tones - Reno to Yosemite; Seaside to Summit - Manchester to Bretton Woods NH), with details on the best attractions, shops, and places to eat on each route.

The atlas includes a distance table, a mileage and driving times map, contact and tourist information for both Canada and the US, including tourist websites, tourist information phone numbers, and hotel chain toll-free phone numbers
