“Towards midnight of yesterday the ice began to break up and a lead opened only 200 yards ahead of us. By 10am this broadened to ¼ mile. All sails were therefore set, and with engines at full speed, an attempt is made to break through the ice.” –Hurley, January 25th 1915.
