Mount Elbrus on a topographic survey map at 1:50,000 from one of the Russian Army Cartographic Units, in a bilingual Russian/English edition. The map shows the south-eastern approaches to the summit from the Azau Valley.

Contour lines are at 20m intervals, with peak heights and graphics for rocky outcrops, snow covered or exposed ice fields, etc. Colouring shows glaciers and forested areas. The map shows local roads in the valley, cart tracks and foot paths, as well as other information usually found on topographic survey maps at this scale: settlements and individual buildings, bridges, electricity transmission lines, etc. Latitude and longitude lines are drawn at 5’ intervals. All place names are given in both Cyrillic and Latin alphabets and, where appropriate, with English translations (e.g. Gikiugankez Snow Valley, Hasankoi-Syryulgen Pass, etc.). Map legend is also bilingual.

On the reverse is a topographic map at 1:100,000 showing the area from the peak to Sochi, Novorossiysk and Krasnodar, plus bilingual notes on the region. Also provided, but in Russian only, are a table showing the chill factor for various combinations of temperature and wind speed, international codes for conveying information to mountain rescue services, and other information for climbers.
