Let our Fame be Great brings together untold stories from the conquest of the Caucasus. Two centuries ago, the Russians pushed out of the cold north towards the Caucasus Mountains that blocked their access to the riches that lie beyond. The mountains and those that lived there were in their way - the Caucasus had to be conquered…

To hear the stories of conquest, Oliver Bullough undertakes a journey amongst the defiant diaspora of people. Travelling far from the mountains he wanders the steppes of Central Asia and the cities of Turkey, he squats in internment camps in Poland and drinks tea in Israel. The stories he hears amplify the horrors he witnesses yet in his mind remains the image of the Chechen woman he had met in a refugee camp; she lived in a ragged tent in a muddy field but she welcomed him with the laughter, kindness and soaring generosity he was to meet with in all the Caucasus peoples he encountered on his travels.
