The Thomas Cook Driving Guides series comprises a range of guides dedicated to exploring a selection of the best car tours and drives in Britain, Europe, Australasia and North America. The guides are designed to provide readers with a flexible reference source to explore the region or country by car; taking in the best local attractions and things to do and see. Recommended driving tours are linked with local sights for each chapter and total driving time is indicated clearly. An introductory section gives an overview of the destination with details of the place and its people, history, art and architecture, culture, geography and food and drink.

Each chapter is divided into a touring area which is rated in categories such as architecture, entertainment and children to allow readers to plan a drive accordingly. Individual chapters give an outline of the region and provide practical guidance on getting there and around. A dedicated ‘gazetteer’ lists the main sights, accommodation and food alphabetically with information on opening times, prices, addresses and contact details provided in a separate sidebar. Suggested tours are also recommended for each chapter, giving detailed, numbered route descriptions which take in the main attractions of the region in addition to providing suggestions for other places worth exploring off the beaten track.

Dedicated chapters profile the destination, including general information on accommodation, airports, children, climate, currency, customs regulations, drinking, eating out, festivals, food, health, maps, museums, national parks, opening times, postal services, public transport, reading, safety and security, shopping, sport, stores, telephones, toilets and travellers with disabilities. There is also a section dedicated to driving in the region or country, with important guidance on accidents, breakdown, caravans and camper vans, driving rules, fuel, parking, roads, security, speed limits and road signs.
