France: Ways of St James to Compostela Map from the IGN presents an overview of all the routes taken by pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela and the tomb of the apostle St James - the greatest of all goals for thousands of pilgrims from Europe in the Middle Ages. The map was prepared by the IGN and the Association de Coopération Interrégionale “Les chemins de Saint-Jacques de Compostelle”.

The routes are clearly marked, with symbols and colours denoting the main routes and various alternatives, cultural monuments and landscapes which appear on the World Heritage list, etc. Towns that have a link to the Compostella theme are also marked, as are places mentioned by Aymeri Picaud in the twelfth century. Also included are lists of UNESCO sites and other monuments, plus useful addresses.

The map has as its base IGN’s general road map of France highlighting the country’s motorway network and connecting routes, but also showing many of the local D-roads, all with their numbers. Current edition of this map was prepared in 2006, so not all road information is up to date.

Map legend for the road map and the overprint includes English. Additional text on the history of pilgrimages, etc, is in French.

This title is one of several thematic tourist maps published by the IGN with their general road map of France as a base and aiming to present the country’s cultural and historical heritage, opportunities for outdoor pursuits, etc.
