I went to Copenhagen for the 2000 New Years Eve. I was fed up with constant, banal talk in London of the "Millennium this" and "Millennium that". So I wanted to go to a place where it was less likely to be mentioned, or if it was I wouldn't understand.
I was invited over for a party at my friend's neighbour's flat. I don't get excited about New Year's Eve, but a change is as good as a rest. Anyway I got drunk along with a bunch of charming Danes, passed out in the street during the night and felt like hell the next day. I can't really remember much except that those Danes don't mess around when it comes to using fireworks as short-range artillery, or when it comes to drinking, come to think of it.
At least I didn't have to watch a bunch of people in kilts indulging in a load of mutual back-slapping on the telly, or pay to get into some overcrowded pub and be assailed repeatedly by the mock-camaraderie of complete strangers, who may just as soon try to burgle one's house at a later date.
