Naples' fame as a dangerous place is quite undeserved these days. You just need to know which areas of town you need to avoid even in daylight and always, always keep an eye on open windows you pass under on New Year's Eve. Yes, Neapolitans love their firecrackers but that is not the only threat.
After midnight they burn old calendars and throw them out of the window, together with all sorts of personal objects that represent the Old. Better do what we did, that is stay safely indoors and consume the never-ending cenone, the extended New Years' Eve dinner.
