Emily Ketteringham to paint mural at Stanfords Bristol to celebrate Robert Macfarlane’s ‘Underland’

We are excited to announce the commissioning of local artist Emily Ketteringham to paint a large scale mural on our store window at Stanfords Bristol to celebrate the launch of author Robert Macfarlane’s new book Underland.

Underland is the highly anticipated new book from the internationally bestselling, prizewinning author of Landmarks, The Lost Words and The Old Ways. The mural will be based on the cover of the book which is a piece of art by Stanley Donwood, who has previously worked with Glastonbury festival and designed Radiohead’s album cover art.

The live painting event will take place on 29th April between 11am and 1pm and will be streamed on social media using the hashtag #underland. Keep an eye on our Stanfords Bristol Twitter and Instagram accounts for updates.

The artist, Emily Ketteringham, is based at Centrespace in Bristol. Her work is multidisciplinary and hugely varied. She was recently commissioned by Bristol Old Vic to create a large scale art installation to celebrate 250 years of history at the theatre.

A previous public project by the artist, a 15 metre long wall paper panel to go in a school atrium above, is all about the oceans of the World. The highly detailed design includes images and information about, among other things, epic voyages of discovery, great ocean migrations and ocean currents.

The event has been funded by publishers Penguin, who offered grants to support independent bookshops with the promotion of this new title. CassArt Bristol – a leading independent retailer of art supplies located on Park Street – are providing sponsorship through the donation of art materials for the mural. The event has also been supported by local art gallery Centrespace where artist Emily Ketteringham is based.
