Launch of the UK’s best travel-writing competition

Bradt Travel Guides is proud once again to team up with Stanfords and The Independent on Sunday to launch our annual travel-writing competition. It’s incredible to think that the competition is now in its 16th year, and has grown to become the UK’s leading platform for aspiring travel writers.

The prizes really are special. Not only are there two holidays to win – to Iceland (courtesy of Discover the World) and Italy’s Cinque Terre (courtesy of Railbookers) – but commissions to write about those holidays for The Independent. This is the only competition that offers the chance to write an article for a national newspaper. And it has kick-started several careers in the past, with winners going on to become leading travel writers. If you are interested in travel writing, this really is an opportunity not to be missed.

This year’s competition theme is ‘Serendipity’. Entries should be 600–800 words in length, and based on real-life, personal experiences. There are three categories – First Prize (open to all), Best Unpublished Writer and Best Young Writer (aged 18–21) – and, in addition to the holidays and writing commissions, the prizes include places on writing workshops run by Travellers Tales and Bradt Travel Guides, and a selection of Bradt guides.

The deadline for entry is midnight on 30th June 2015, so get writing! For full entry details, as well as examples of past winning entries and tips from the judges, see www.bradtguides.com/travelwriting

Good luck!
