Make Tracks to Rio

2016: The Summer of Sport. The gift that keeps on giving (for sport fans). It’s sort of like the football season – just when you thought it was over, here we go, here we go, here we go! Again.

So, now it’s time for the Olympics, which in their defence only happen every four years. Presumably that’s why Usain Bolt has so much free time to make all those Virgin Broadband adverts. Should be good though, given they’ve all had so much time off to rest and go on Strictly.

The Olympics are definitely the most fun of The Sports, what with all the running about and jumping and throwing things – and then there’s that one where they are basically playing tag as they run around the track hitting each other’s hands with a stick. Of course, there’s also all those events that nobody in their right mind would ever be interested in watching but somehow we all become obsessive about for the duration of the Games – I’m looking at you, Weightlifting, and you, Artistic Gymnastics.

But, during all the fun and games, and scare stories about potential infectious disease spreading, spare a thought for a few of the events that are no longer part of the Olympics, and perhaps reflect on whether the World would be a happier place if they were still on the list:

The Swimming Obstacle Race (Surely this is for kids?)
The Plunge for Distance Swimming Race (Again, a game kids play in the pool, no?)
The Underwater Swimming Race (Definitely the invention of parents who just want a bit of peace – like an aquatic “who can be quiet the longest”.)
The Tug of War (Kids Vs Teachers?)
One Handed Weightlifting (Not a euphemism.)
Live Pigeon Shooting (Presumably from a distance, else where’s the challenge?)
