Stanfords Stocks Large-Format Personalised Historical Maps

Here at Stanfords, we're about to add another product to our range. In partnership with Cassini Publishing, we will shortly be offering Mapmaker-80 which provides site-centred historical maps of any part of England and Wales. These will match the 80x80cm format of the popular OS Select maps of the present-day landscape.

“We receive numerous requests for historical maps that match present-day OS Select maps,” says Stanfords' Martin Greenaway, “but previously this hasn’t been possible. Present-day OS maps are available in a set of seamless tiles, but until recently historical maps were not. Fortunately, Cassini has changed all that!”

Over the last four years, Cassini Publishing has been republishing historical Ordnance Survey maps, reprojecting and combining them to match the coverage of the present-day OS Landrangers. The resulting combined files means that maps can be created of any area with speed and accuracy.

“Historical maps on demand can already be created using our Mapmaker service,” Cassini’s James Anderson explains, “but these are currently only available on our website, to a maximum output size of A3 and to pre-paid customers. Creating a Mapmaker-80 service to resellers was an obvious next step and we’re delighted to be working with Stanfords to produce maps that match the 80x80cm map size of OS Select.”

Initially, Mapmaker-80 maps can be produced using four mapping series from 1805 to 1946 at a scale of 1:50,000. The cost will be £34.95 each, although discounts will be available for maps of the same area from different periods. The product will be launched in mid November. Other, more detailed, mapping series will be added in early 2009. As with OS Select, Mapmaker-80 will be available from Stanfords London, Bristol and Manchester Data and Mapping Centres and here on our website.

“Mapmaker-80 means that our we can now offer our customers historical maps that exactly match the OS Select maps we have created for them,” Martin Greenaway observes. “We already stock Cassini’s entire range of Landranger-matching 1:50,000 maps and know how popular these have proved. Now their products match OS Select as well!”
