Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) Journey of a Lifetime Award

Every year since 2001, the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG), in partnership with BBC Radio 4, has enabled someone’s dream travel project to come true. Whether it’s reporting on conservation in the jungles of Sierra Leone, training with traditional wrestlers in Mongolia, or searching for the tigers of the Sundarbans forest, the Journey of a Lifetime Award aims to support informed travel and discover new radio talent.

Rhiannon Adam arrives at Pitcairn Island, Britain’s last remaining overseas territory in the Pacific and one of the most remote places on the planet.

This year, Rhiannon Adam undertook her ‘journey of a lifetime’ to Pitcairn Island, a tiny volcanic outcrop in the South Pacific Ocean with a population of just 50 people. Settled in 1790 by mutineers from HMS Bounty, Pitcairn measures just one mile wide, by two miles long and is only accessible by sea. Rhiannon spent three months living with the islanders, gaining a unique understanding of this isolated community, and recorded her experiences for a documentary on BBC Radio 4.

The Journey of a Lifetime Award offers a £5,000 grant for an original and inspiring journey, and the chance to record your experiences for a BBC Radio 4 documentary. If you have a curiosity about the world and an enthusiasm to share your discoveries with others through the medium of radio, see Journey of a Lifetime to apply.

Application deadline 28th of October 2015.
