Come and see the Independent on Sunday/ Bradt Travel Writing Competition awards ceremony at our store in London, with the winners announced on the night! See who will win the grand prize of a trip to Kyrgyzstan and a commission from The Independent!
The theme this year is "The Heart of the City" and more than 200 entries were submitted for the competition. Hilary Bradt, founder of Bradt travel guides, had the awesome task of selecting the top 80, and the six shortlisted entries were then selected by the panel of judges including editorial staff of Bradt Travel Guides, Jonathan Lorie of Travellers' Tales and the travel editor of The Independent on Sunday.
Douglas Schatz, managing director of Stanfords, will choose the winner. At the same time Jon Lorie, of Travellers' Tales, will reveal his award to the best unpublished writer.
Hilary Bradt says, “It has been a real pleasure reading these accounts. Everyone has taken such care, and each year I’m impressed with what good travellers you all are… There are so many notable accounts of what is rather vaguely called responsible tourism or, in Bradtspeak, positive tourism, where the traveller makes an effort to engage with the local people and turn a negative experience into something heart-warming and memorable.”
The Independent on Sunday will publish the winning entry and offer a commission for a 1,200-word article based on the winner's prize holiday. The prize is a seven-night holiday for two in Kyrgyzstan. Flights have been donated by bmi (www.flybmi.com), while Regent Holidays (www.regent-holidays.co.uk) is arranging the itinerary, including tours of Bishkek and Karakol, and visits to the alpine Altyn-Arasham Valley and the red cliffs of Jety-Oguz Gorge.
Tickets are FREE, but numbers are limited, so pick yours up in-store, by email: sales@stanfords.co.uk or by phone: 020 7836 1321.
