Join us for a talk by James Cracknell at the Royal Geographical Society and hear about a truly glorious British adventure. For the first time since Scott's ill-fated race to the South Pole against Amundsen in 1913, a handful of teams from around the world were granted permission to race each other, on foot, across Antarctica – starting on New Year's Day and dragging their food, their tents (and their rubbish) with them.
This time, however, two hard-nut Norwegian teams were up against double-Olympic Gold medallist James Cracknell and TV presenter Ben Fogle, who rowed the Atlantic together in 2005. The adventure is regaled in their book, Race to the Pole, and was also filmed for a five-part primetime TV documentary, On Thin Ice, to be shown on BBC2 in June.
