In 1933, at the age of eighteen, Patrick Liegh Fermour set out to walk from the Hook of Holland to Constantinople. This book covers the second stage of that walk - from Esztergom to the "Iron Gates", on the border between Yugoslavia and Romania. This book is particularly remarkable because shortly after Patrick Leigh Fermour passed through these lands they were swallowed up by Nazi Germany and then sealed away for nearly 50 years behind the Iron Curtain.
