Bradt guides operate on a sustainable philosophy for both the guides they publish and the places they tell you about. Dedicated to responsible travel, the guides encourage the tourist to have the least negative impact on the environment they visit at the same time as having the most positive experience they can. Bradt continue to develop the ethos they began with in 1974 which incorporates in-depth information on culture and natural history with the nuts and bolts of what to see and where to stay. Illustrative photographs are kept to a minimum for the sake of using as much space as possible to impart the maximum amount of useful information.
The guides in Bradt’s catalogue are predominantly structured around two main sections with additional appendices for topics such as language and further reading lists. Each guide begins with a thorough introduction to the destination, looking at information on history, culture and religion, health and safety, tour operators, red tape and the practicalities of planning your trip. The second half of the guides deal with what to do when you actually arrive, and feature detailed recommendations of where to stay and where to eat for the whole range of budgets from upmarket to shoe-string. Basic black and white maps are printed to orientate the traveller.
