One of the titles in a series of detailed hiking maps of the Canadian Rockies, covering the most popular areas of the Banff, Jasper, Kootenay and Yoho National Parks, as well as Waterton Lakes NP further south and the adjoining Goat Haunt area of Montana. The maps are contoured (50m or 25m interval in most titles) and some titles also have relief shading. Extensive overprint highlights hiking trails, many with detailed descriptions provided on the reverse. Most titles also include mountain bike, equestrian and ski routes. Symbols indicate various facilities, including camping grounds, hostels, lodges, visitors’ centres, viewpoints, canoe rentals, etc. The maps have UTM coordinates and latitude/longitude margin ticks. On the reverse, in addition to the descriptions of the trails, there are contact details, general tips, and other useful information.
In this title: a map covering the popular recreational terrain close to Calgary, from Sibbald Flats (Hwy 68) in the north, through the Elbow Valley (Hwy 66), and south to Hwy 546 in the Sheep Valley. The map extends west to Powderface Trail Road. Popular hiking and biking trails covered on this map include Elbow Falls, Prairie Mountain, Fullerton Loop, Moose Mountain, Sulphur Springs, Nihahi Ridge, Powderface Ridge, Jumpingpound Ridge, Cox Hill, Sheep River Falls, Volcano Ridge, Ole Buck Loop and Deer Ridge. Hikers and cyclists eager to hit the trails early in the season should note that many of the Elbow Valley and Sibbald Flats trails on this map are snow-free as early as mid-April, depending on the year. The complete Elbow Loop Trail and more of the Sheep Valley are covered on the reverse at 1:100 000. Contours interval is 25m, with relief shading. The map has a UTM grid and margin ticks at 5’.
On the reverse are trail descriptions and photos of 20 recommended day hikes, seven classic mountain bike rides, as well as one prime area recommended for cross-country skiing. Also included is a map at 1:18.000 of the Little Elbow Recreation Area and contact information for visitor centres and campgrounds.
