Canyoning – Classic Canyons in Spain, France and Italy is John Bull’s Cicerone guide to a selection of scrambling, aquatic and roped descents in Southern Europe. The guide focuses on canyons in five limestone areas of Southern Europe – from the Costa Blanca via the Pyrenees to Provence, Sardinia and Mallorca. Experienced walkers are catered for in some of the easier canyons that are featured although some of the more difficult routes are also accessible to relative beginners. The Mediterranean canyons provide an ideal setting for canyoners of all abilities and the routes range from two-hour strolls to more challenging day-long aquatic expeditions.
The guide is arranged geographically with a variety of routes – Rio Vero area, Rodellar, Mallorca and Costa Blanca in Spain, Apt and the Vaucluse area, Sisteron, Moustiers-Ste-Marie and the Verdun area in France and Sardinia in Italy – included in each section. Each route has an information box detailing the type of rock, total length and descent, recommended gear, times and the relevant map. A detailed introduction provides information on technical aspects of canyon descent such as route grading and quality, safety precautions, team size, equipment and clothing and special considerations in aquatic canyons. There is also practical advice on seasons and when to go, getting there and local transport and preparation and what to take. Detailed canyon routes are accompanied by gradient sketch graphs mapping the route in addition to colour photographs illustrating some of the best canyons in Southern Europe.
