Part of the Collected Traveller series, this book aims to be a summa of the best travel guides and best travel writing on Tuscany and Umbria. A very opinionated section on practical information is organized as an A-Z and includes reviews of major travel guides as well as advice on local culture and customs. The following chapters are dedicated to contemporary politics, Italian food, Florence, Tuscany as a whole and Umbria. Each chapter is composed of contributions by various writers and journalists. Lots of precious advice on background reading accompanies each section and restaurants and accomodation suggestions are plentiful. Tuscany is given much larger coverage than Umbria, with a rich section on Florence. This book is probably not ideal to travel with as the paper is very fragile and the print in the practical section is very small but it is a compulsory read for the traveller that likes to know about where he/she is going before he/she goes.
