Indexed tourist map of the country, with additional street plans and enlargements of popular regions. Road detail distinguishes untarred roads and shows intermediate driving distances on main routes. The publisher’s chosen method for conveying most effectively the best routes to the locations and regions of interest is to reduce distracting details. Consequently, compared with some other maps for the same region, this map omits some minor routes and shows no elaborate representation of general relief, although mountain ranges and swamp areas are indicated and named and some peak heights are marked. Main railways, ferries and airports are marked. Reserves, protected areas, marine reserves and national parks are clearly highlighted and Indian reserves and provinces are shown. Symbols show major petrol stations, border posts, places of interest, ruins, lighthouses, beaches and watersport resorts. No latitude and longitude lines are marked. The map is annotated with tables of regional climate data, and a distance chart is included. Isla del Coco is shown in an inset at 1:98,000, and there is a streetplan of central San José, indicating hotels, parks, places of interest and district names.

On the reverse, several areas are shown at various larger scales and with a little more detail: the Guanacaste Coast, Peninsula de Nicoya, Peninsula de Osa, Central Valley (San José and surroundings), the South Caribbean coast (Puerto Limón to the Panama border), Tortuguro, the Monteverde area and the Quepos/Manuel Antonio area. Also included are clear street plans of central Liberia, Heredia, Cartago, Puerto Limón, Puntarenas and Alajuela. These are not indexed but show local sites of interest, notable buildings and visitor facilities e.g. hotels, post offices, museums, hospitals and information centres. One further map provides and overview of the country’s collection of national parks and other protected areas.
