Spiral-bound, detailed road atlas - with town plans - covering the southern part of the country at 1:200,000 and the rest, north of around Oulu, at 1:250,000. The cartography is similar to that used in the GT series of folded road maps by the same publisher, but with height contours (at 50m intervals) only used in the smaller scale section for the northern region. Lake altitudes are marked and filed and marsh areas are shown. Road classification is detailed, indicating width of single carriageway roads, and including unsurfaced tracks and private roads, Intermediate road distances are marked on main roads. Canals, railways, airports, airfields and ferries also feature. For the Turku archipelago there is a diagram of ferry links and a list of routes and operating times, with internet addresses for further information. Provincial, regional and municipal boundaries are shown, and national parks, military firing ranges and public hiking areas are clearly indicated. Where relevant, alternative Swedish and Lapp place names are stated. Symbols show travel and tourism related features and landmarks eg. places of interest, tourist information sites, filling stations, service stations, border crossing points, hospitals, campsites, various leisure facilities, churches, lighthouses and towers.
There are more detailed 1:100,000 maps for large urban areas: Oulu, Helsinki/Espoo/Vantaa, Tampere/Nokia/Ylojarvi, Turku, and the atlas also includes 50 plans of towns and city centres at 1:40,000. These are not indexed but extra detail includes hotels and bus stations. The multilingual map legend includes English. Additional information includes road sign information and a table of road distances. Almost 60,000 names and geographical features are in the index. Where relevant, alternative Swedish and Lapp place names are stated on the map and are included in the index. The cartography sample here is from the 1:200,000 section.
PLEASE NOTE:
Since 2001 Finland’s survey organization has been publishing maps under an imprint name of Geniemap. They have now reverted back to their old name of Karttakeskus, but some titles are still available only as Geniemap.
