Light, high quality, A5 paperback guides from the FFRP, the Fédération Française de la Randonnée Pédestre, to the GRs, the long-distance hiking routes, with colour extracts from IGN's 1:50,000 and 1:25,000 topographic survey maps overprinted with the routes.
The GRs, Sentiers de Grande Randonnée, form a dense network of footpaths across the French countryside, with several routes spanning the whole country. Particularly popular are the Alpine sections of the GR5, GR10 along the Pyrenees, and various pilgrim routes of the Way of St. James. Each topo-guide covers either one section of a longer path, as indicated by the examples below, a shorter connecting route, or a circuit .
The guides have colour extracts from IGN's 1:50,000 and 1:25,000 topographic survey maps overprinted with the route. The descriptions of the route are divided into short sections, according to the difficulty of the terrain, and are always placed next to the maps for easy reference. The text is in French, but a large amount of information is conveyed by symbols. A list of all the main points along the route indicates what facilities can be found there: public transport, food shops, and all types of accommodation (gîtes d'étape, campsites, mountain refuges, hotels, etc.) with addresses and telephone numbers.
- How to choose the right topo-guide from the accompanying series grid:
- Reference number of a guide to a GR route is printed in a red box across the route (see examples below).
- Each differently coloured section of a route is one topo-guide, there are no guides currently in print to the GRs shown in grey.
- Yellow, blue and green boxes show reference numbers of guides with day walks, listed on our website in a separate series. Some titles in that series include a part of a GR or a GRP route and are also listed on our website in the long-distance category.
- Guides are regularly revised and our website is updated accordingly, so titles may not be currently available even if shown on the attached series grid.
